Anonymous asked:Did you hear about the news that Oaken is the first openly gay Disney character? It's been circling around Tumblr and i'm not sure if it's real but if it is i'm pretty happy about it.
I honestly don’t think the family in the sauna were supposed be his family - the way that scene’s worded in both the novelisation and screenplay make it seem as though they’re just a random family that’s visiting his shop.
I’m pretty sure the woman to the right of the man is his adult wife, it’s just that her proportions are so similar to their kids that people are confusing her for a child.
I guess we’ll never know whether Oaken’s the first WDAS character to be explicitly shown to be in a same-sex relationship (although let’s be real here, Jumba and Pleakley were basically canon) unless the storyboarder or Jennifer Lee herself comes out and says anything, but people are free to have their own headcanons about them. Oaken and his husband adopting orphans they find is a cute idea (although it raises the question of what the hell is going on with the ice harvesters for them to be losing so many kids)
I just wouldn’t go around heralding Oaken as the first openly gay Disney character (just like I wouldn’t do the same for Elsa, despite all that possible subtext - this post sums it up pretty nicely) when the state of his relationship with the family in the sauna is ambiguous at best, because it will kind of lessen the impact of whenever we get the first true queer character with their own character arc / romance plot / etc.
This makes sense, but at the same time maybe it’s made to look either way, just in case it backfires and turns into a scandal they can go with the argument it was a random family and he’s not gay or join the bandwagon and say oh yeah totally gay and proud!
